Chapter 17

Meg

Walton trotted beside Meg’s feet, his black ears bobbing with each step he took. His little nose sniffed at the ground, but he didn’t adjust course. He simply kept moving along, always doing what he was supposed to do. Meg smiled, at least something was going right in her life — she wasn’t sure what she’d have done these last few weeks without Walton. He was her constant companion when she was at home, never judging and ever ready to snuggle on the couch.

Oscar strained at the leash Sarah held in one hand, tugging Sarah in every which direction as they power-walked through the park. Next to her, Vicky led Petal, Cindy’s dog, who seemed to think she had much better things to do than walk through the park on a leash. She stopped frequently, parking her small rear end on the pavement, and refusing to budge until Vicky managed to distract her long enough with treats for them to continue on their way for a while longer.

“Should we hold your baby shower at the beach?” asked Sarah. “It’d be perfect this time of year, and we could have a BBQ in the afternoon at the park beside the beach when there’s a lovely breeze. Or, were you thinking of something fancier?”

Meg shook her head. “No, that sounds perfect for us. We definitely want it to be casual, and I love the beach. But Brad wants to be involved and I don’t think he’d be willing to go to the beach. I’m sorry.” Tightness pulled the muscles of her neck, and a headache formed at the base of her skull.

There were so many things going on in her life at the moment it was hard for her to keep pace. She loved that her friends wanted to throw her a baby shower, but the only thing she’d been absorbed with for days now was the results of the pregnancy scan. She hadn’t talked about it with anyone, not even Brad. He’d been encouraging, thoughtful, and more affectionate than usual, but otherwise hadn’t raised the subject either.

Sarah bit down on her lip as Vicky piped up. “Oh, of course, we should’ve thought about that. He still won’t go to the beach?”

“No, not yet. His entire attitude has improved so much, especially with his studies and the baby coming, but he’s yet to try wheeling down to the beach. We even had the World Surfing Federation donate him a beach wheelchair so he could make it down to the water’s edge. But it’s still in our garage locker.”

Sarah strained against Oscar as he lunged hard towards a bush that seemed particularly appealing to his outstretched, quivering nose. “Oscar! For the love of— can’t you just behave like Winston?”

Meg and Vicky both chuckled at that. Meg felt the tension in her neck ease as her mood shifted. She was grateful for good friends, and walking Winston in the park always helped her feel a little better. Still, how would she manage when the baby came? She couldn’t hide away from her feelings then.
